Whatever therefore might be done in the

case of an Officer newly appointed to the post of single Magistrate,

the result to me personally is to exactly double my work, and to

throw upon me additional duties for the performance of which a salary

of $5184 per annum has hitherto been assigned.

It is now proposed to assign to me the

same salary for doing the work of both Magistrates as I have for so

long been receiving for doing the work of one, and to make up by

special provision for what I lose through giving up the command of

the Fire Brigade.

I have the honour to request that a more

equitable arrangement than this may be made. In the first place I consider

that whatever my enoluments may be I am entitled to receive them as

salary for work done and not in the manner proposed which differs both

in effect and principle from a properly constituted salary.

In the next place I would subait that

to leave my emoluments exactly as they were in amount, at the same

time that my Magisterial duties are doubled, is scarcely reasonable

to me personally.

I fully admit the power of the

Government to make the salary what it pleases in the case of a newly

appointed officer, and it is only in reference to myself who an

differently placed, and who an under no obligation to undertake these

fresh duties unless for suitable return, that the arrangement seems to

me to be inadequate.
